The Copacabana district


This is the most famous beach in Rio and Brazil and probable whole South America. Copacabana is the capital of Brazilian tourism and it’s possible to spend an entire holiday without leaving this area. It’s about 4,5 km long stretch of white sand, and a big sidewalk that is used for walking, running, bicycling and roller-skating. There are many beach soccer fields, as well as volley-ball and foot-volley ball courts on the sand. Don’t forget to try an ice-cold coconut at a beach bar on the sidewalk! On Sundays one of the road lanes are closed so people can stroll with there kids and dogs here. There are about 600,000 people living here, and with 25,000 people per sq km this is one of the highest population densities in the world. The fireworks on New Years Eve attracts more than 2 million people down to the beach at Copacabana.
