Flats in Barra da TijucaAn area that hardly can be considered historical is Barra da Tijuca.
In 1969 architect Lúcio Costa reccomended that an area known for lakes and beach dunes to be developed as a new area for development for Rio de Janeiro to grow. As with Brasilia, which had same architect, the neighbourhood is planned and not grown out of organic development. That is if you drive a car. As with Brasilia, going by foot will not help you much, and there is no metro system. What then is left is the bus. As a new neighbourhood with long distances it is a rather safe area. With nicer apartments and flats. One could call Barra for a Suburb. For someone who relocates from other continent and brings a family this is a neighbourhood that should be given some interest.
