As with all big cities whether in Europe or in the States there are no guatantees. All of our apartments are however in what can be considered safe areas and are not in the locations you "read about in the news".
In general Rio de Janeiro is not as unsafe tour spot as what you might believe based on the news reports.
The city and larger metropolitan area of Rio is very large. Further north and away from the beaches and the tourist locations the amount of violence increases. Same applies to the city center of Rio de Janeiro which basically is a place for commerce. The few apartments located in these areas are for Brazilians and not for the travelling foreigner. Some exceptions exists particularly in the areas of Lapa and Santa Teresa. That is much further away from the quality places for the tourists to visit - Like the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema and the Lagoon.
